GEDDES -- Updated at 8:30pm:
Government in the Town of Geddes will get smaller.
We just spoke with Manny Falcone, the Geddes Town Supervisor, who says voters overwhelmingly support a plan to have the Town Clerk's Office take over the duties of the town's Receiver of Taxes and Assessments.
The results were 530 yes votes to 55 no votes.
Falcone says tonight's vote makes the proposal law. The Town Clerk's Office will take over on May 1st.
Original story:
Voters in the Town of Geddes are going to the polls to vote on a referendum to eliminate the position of Receiver of Taxes and Assessment.
Town officials say the current Receiver of Taxes has retired. If the referendum passes, the duties of this office will be moved to the Town Clerk's office, saving the taxpayers approximately $100,000 per year.
Geddes Town Supervisor Manny Falcone says budget cuts have made it necessary for the town to look for savings wherever it can find it, and most residents support the move.
"Once you explain the reasoning for what we are doing, and that they are still going to be able to come to the town hall and still pay their taxes and hand over their money to someone who lives in the town, they are okay with it," he says.
Polls close at 8:00 p.m. The vote is taking place at the Geddes Town Hall, located at 1000 Woods Road.
Falcone says the town expects to have the ballots counted later tonight. Only registered voters in the Town of Geddes are eligible to vote.
