SYRACUSE -- Update:
On Tuesday night, The Syracuse City School District Board of Education will introduce one of two finalists for the job of next Superintendent. Dr Bernard Taylor Jr is currently the Superintendent of the Grand Rapids Public Schools, Michigan's third largest public school district and the second largest employer in the City of Grand Rapids. Prior to his role in Grand Rapids, Bernard served as Superintendent in Kansas City, Missouri.
Taylor, Jr., is in his fifth year as Superintendent of the Grand Rapids Public Schools. The district's website says Dr. Taylor has worked aggressively to implement academic and instructional reforms to increase student achievement and high school graduation rates. In November 2008, GRPS was recognized in a Detroit News editorial opinion as a "model" urban school district due to its "persistent, strategic, disciplined work."
Previous Information: "Two finalists for Syracuse school superintendent"
The Syracuse City School District has narrowed down its candidates to fill the job of superintendent down to two, and will introduce both to the public before a final decision is made.
The district will host two separate public receptions to introduce the two finalists for the position of School Superintendent. The reception for the first candidate will take place at Corcoran High School (919 Glenwood Avenue) on Tuesday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. The reception for the second candidate will also be at Corcoran High School on Wednesday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m.
The receptions are open to the public and parents, students, district employees and community members are encouraged to attend.
The receptions will provide the two finalists an opportunity to interact with and introduce themselves to the Syracuse community. Those in attendance will be able to provide feedback and insight to the Board of Education regarding the candidates.
By agreement with the finalists, the Board of Education will be releasing specific information pertaining to each of the candidates on February 27 and March 1, respectively.
The candidates are seeking to replace current superintendent Dan Lowengard, who has announced his retirement effective at the end of the current school year.
