ALBANY -- In this “Capitol Report,” one New York State Assemblyman wants to bring the State from the Paper Age to the Digital Age. Tedisco: “You can strengthen your muscles with these.”
Assemblyman Jim Tedisco does have some use for copies of the Legislative Digest. But that’s about the only one.
Tedisco: “Lets stop the waste, the millions of dollars we spend on printing unnecessary reports.”
There were close to 12,000 bills introduced last year. By law, paper copies must be kept on members desks and available for public review. The whole book gets reprinted each week, not just new additions. What does Tedisco compare that to??
Tedisco: “All of us getting a new phone book each week on our front porch because 10 people moved into the neighborhood.”
The assemblyman is sponsoring a bill to bring the process into the digital age.
Tedisco: “We can get it on our blackberries, our laptops, our staff can get it”
In a state strapped for cash, Tedisco estimates big savings.
Tedisco: “Just for the Assembly, $26 million dollars.”
He sees other benefits with his bill as well.
Tedisco: “ I would think all the environmentalists would be very excited about this.”
Several other states have gone paperless.
Tedisco: “And Ohio recently just done it and saved a million and a half dollars.”
If New York doesn’t follow, the Tedisco workout will continue.
