FORT DRUM (AP) -- he U.S. military has its own language, filled with acronyms and jargon that's a mystery to most civilians.
Business owners and others living and working near Fort Drum can get help learning the military jargon used by the thousands of soldiers stationed at the Army post in northern New York.
With more than 15,000 members of the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, plus thousands of their family members, civilians can often get stumped when subjected to military lingo.
To help out, the Association of the U.S. Army and Fort Drum Army Family Team Building holds a free class -- "This Is A Soldier 101" -- to teach the civilian community the military basics, such as what the different ranks mean and what are some of the issues facing families when a soldier deploys.
The people running the program says understanding a soldier's lingo makes it easier to be better neighbors.
