MANLIUS -- 10:45pm Update:

Voters in the Fayetteville-Manlius School District overwhelmingly approved a $10.5 million plan to make major upgrades at four schools, and build a new bus garage.

The vote result was 1,542 yes votes to 755 no votes.

Construction is expected to begin in June of next year on a host of projects including a new elevator at Eagle Hill Middle School, new doors at the high school to comply with disability laws, and new drainage and sod at the athletic complex.

The project will also replace the 60 year old bus garage on West Franklin Street.

The projects don't require new tax dollars.

Original story:

Voters in the Fayetteville-Manlius School District are being asked to approve a capital project totaling 10.5 million dollars. The district says the project will not raise local property taxes.  Money will come from state building aid and a capital reserve fund. Money that can only be used for building projects and not operations.

  • Fayetteville Elementary School: Replacing the heating and ventilation system, which includes replacing two 1952 boilers and a third that currently does not work.
  • Eagle Hill Middle School: Replacing a 25-year-old elevator that has failed several times, as well as cramped student lockers.
  • Wellwood Middle School: Installing an integrated fire alarm system to replace a system that is comprised of previously renovated systems.
  • F-M High School: Replacing doors and door handles that are not compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act or upgraded fire safety code.
  • F-M High School Athletic Field: Drainage, irrigation, and sod replacement*
  • Bus garage: Replacing the nearly 60-year-old bus garage at its current site on West Franklin Street in Fayetteville. The existing facility has a number of structural and safety issues, including deteriorating vehicle maintenance pits, no lifts, and aging concrete structures.
  • Transportation Office Building: Expanding and renovating the 30-year-old facility, which includes replacing asbestos tile flooring, making bathrooms compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and upgrading the plumbing and heating and ventilation system.

* The Fayetteville-Manlius Community Sports Facility Association, a group of F-M residents, is raising money to replace the high school's existing grass field with an all-weather turf field. If they are successful and the field is replaced, the money that would have been spent on field drainage, irrigation, and sod replacement at the high school would be redirected to alternate projects in the district's long-range plan. Likely projects are locker replacements at Wellwood Middle School and F-M High School. No district money will be used to fund a turf field.

Voting will take place from 7am to 9pm at the Fayetteville Elementary School. Voters must be U.S. Citizens, at least 18, and a resident of the district for at least 30 days.
