UTICA -- DNA helps solve a 5-year-old cold case involving the burglary of a North Utica ice cream shop.

Utica police say someone broke into the Tasty Treat on September 29, 2006. The person took off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

At the time of the burglary, the suspect cut themselves and left behind some blood. The blood evidence was collected and submitted for DNA testing.

In May 2009, a new investigator was assigned to the case, and received a positive DNA hit on the blood.

On Thursday, police found the suspect, Jay Kepner, of Sunset Ave., and charged him with burglary, a felony, and petit larceny.

So five years after this ice cream burglary mystery began, this case is no longer "cold."
