Assist. U.S. Attorney Gregory West arrested

New York State Police have arrested an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York for drunk driving and traveling the wrong way on Interstate 81 with a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit. 59 year old Gregory A. West is best known for the prosecution and conviction of former Syracuse Mayor Lee Alexander. He also has used the federal RICO statutes to prosecute the Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club. He has specialized in the investigation and prosecution of organized crime.

Tuesday March 1st at 10:19 p.m. the Jefferson County emergency call center received a report of a driver traveling the wrong direction on Interstate 81 in the Town of Pamelia near Exit 48. That is the exit for Fort Drum just north of Watertown. A state trooper in the area tracked down the Toyota Tundra pick up truck heading south in the northbound lane. West was pulled over without anyone being injured. His blood alcohol content was .17.

The State Police ticketed West for driving while intoxicated, driving the wrong way on a one way street and drinking alcohol in a motor vehicle.

He is due in Town of Pamelia court on March 10th to answer to the charges.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John Duncan said late this afternoon Gregory West did report the DWI as required. There is an internal administrative process underway. Duncan said, "We take it very seriously."

Gregory West has been a federal prosecutor for nearly 30 years. He has received numerous commendations for his work from the Justice Department, FBI, DEA, IRS and the New York State Police.
