SYRACUSE (AP) -- Syracuse is among the two dozen cities worldwide that have been selected by IBM to receive up to $400,000 in computer expertise from the technology giant.
Armonk-based IBM announced Wednesday that 24 cities will receive the company's Smarter Cities Challenge grants, a three-year, $50 million program aimed at using technology to improve a city's quality of life. Syracuse is one of just eight U.S. cities chosen, and the only one in New York.
Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner tells the Post-Standard of Syracuse that an IBM team will arrive in the fall and work with city planners on predicting problems with vacant housing. Syracuse has more than 2,000 vacant properties.
