SYRACUSE -- Update:
Syracuse Police now report that the standoff with an armed man on Erikson Street in Syracuse is over.
Police took man into custody around 5:45 a.m. after sending a tear gas canister into the home. There are no reports of injuries.
Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler tells CNYcentral the man in custody is a convicted felon. He would not identify the suspect or provide details of his criminal record. Fowler says the man's wife and her five children were able to get out of the home safely. They are now staying with relatives.
Chief Fowler says the decision was made to use tear gas to try and end the situation made because the scene is not far from a school. As the morning approached the residential neighborhood and the area around the school would become more active.
Police were originally called to a home in the 100 block of Erikson Street around 9 o'clock Thursday night for a domestic incident.
The suspect is expected to be arraigned in Syracuse City Court later today.
