BOONVILLE (AP) -- A snowmobiler's ordeal in Oneida County over the weekend demonstrates why it's a good idea to carry a cell phone when you're far afield.
The Oneida County Sheriff's Office says 48-year-old Michael Edick of Boonville called 911 when he got stuck in waist-deep water in a farmer's field Sunday afternoon, about 50 miles northeast of Syracuse. The sheriff's office was able to pinpoint Edick's location based on his cell phone signal, and direct rescue teams from the Boonville and Constableville fire departments to the right spot.
Edick was suffering from exposure to the icy water, but the sheriff's office says he declined medical attention.
The sheriff's office used the incident as a lesson to snowmobilers: Always carry a cell phone so rescuers can locate you if you get into trouble.
