Bicentennial kickoff in April
Oswego County is launching its War of 1812 bicentennial commemoration in April.
Paul Lear, superintendent at Fort Ontario State Historic Site, says the City of Oswego was pivotal, because it was a key part of the supply chain to troops on the front (including at Sackets Harbor). There was a battle at Ft. Ontario, where British troops won, and Lear says militia from Central New York as well as regular military from all over the new United States were deployed to this area.
Part of the bicentennial commemoration will include a grave marker campaign to recognize local soldiers from the War of 1812---research and genealogy efforts are already underway. Anyone who would like an 1812 veteran recognized can call Greg Monette, 342-7232, or email at gmonett1@twcny.rr.com.
There's a symposium on the War of 1812 at Oswego's American Foundry, Saturday April 2, 9am - 5pm.
There is more information at Oswego County's tourism website or at the Great Lakes Seaway Trail.
