A man who was shot by State Police Saturday night in the Southern Tier is the son an Onondaga County sheriff's deputy and former candidate for sheriff. That's according to Sheriff Kevin Walsh.
Police shot 23-year-old Joel Shelley after they say he approached them with a shotgun in a threatening manner. Shelley is the son of Deputy Toby Shelley.

New York State Troopers in Owego shot a man Saturday night after they say he pulled a shotgun on them.
Police say Joel Shelley pointed a shotgun at an officer parked in a U-turn on ST-17 in the Town of Nichols, which is 30 miles west of Binghamton. The incident happened around 10 P.M.
Police say Shelley then drove off.
Troopers say they spotted Shelley's car travelling northbound on Route 34 in the Town of Barton. Shelley eventually pulled over, stepped out of his vehicle, and started approaching the trooper's car with a shotgun.
Police say troopers then fired shots at Shelley and hit him several times. Shelley was transported to a nearby hospital in Pennsylvania and is undergoing treatment for gunshot wounds.
Police continue to investigate the shooting and charges are pending against Shelley.
