EARLVILLE, CHENANGO COUNTY -- A Chenango County couple may have to wait more than two months for a tax refund that should have only taken a week to ten days.
Bonnie Horton tells CNY Central’s Jim Kenyon that the IRS is not responding to her complaints. It turns out, Horton may be among hundreds of thousands of taxpayers nationwide whose refunds are delayed because of a problem with processing the first-time home buyers credit.
The IRS confirms it has assigned additional staff and resources to processing returns stemming from the home buyers tax credit. The problem involves form 5405 which involves repayment of credits taken in 2009. The IRS expects, “most if not all of these refunds will be available after April 5th.”
Horton says that’s too long and is counting on a $4800 refund which she says she should have received by February 25th. As a result, Horton says the delay has created a hardship as she tries to pay bills and make ends meet.
