SYRACUSE -- The national unemployment rate is at its lowest level in two years. It dropped in March to 8.8 percent.
CNY Works in Syracuse in a not-for-profit organization that offers a variety of services for people looking for jobs. Even with the new unemployment numbers, Executive Director Lenore Sealy says they are very busy.
Sealy says they are still seeing a steady stream of people coming in who are looking for work. She says there are jobs out there, but the challenge is finding people with the skills. Sealy says people are getting jobs in a variety of sources, but they may have to learn a new skill or add to their current ones.
She says people are finding jobs in patient care, health care, engineering and related fields.
"The message, people need to look at what their core skills are, what their transferable skills are and figure out how do they build on those skills," Sealy says. "How do they take the skills they have and package or re package them? Do additional education and training if necessary and find out where they can parle those skills in the market."
Sealy went on to say even if you have a job you should still be investing in your skills, keeping them current (whether that involves taking classes on the side, keeping up with technology or learning news skills) because unfortunately, you never know when you could be out of work.
