SYRACUSE -- The fourth and final wave of the Distracted Driving Enforcement Project is underway in Syracuse. From April 4th through the 17th, police will be cracking down on people who use their cell phone behind the wheel.

Syracuse is one of two cities across the country to be part of this program. The U.S. Department of Transportation gave Syracuse and Hartford, Connecticut $300,000 grants last spring to target distracted in four separate crackdowns. More than 6,900 tickets were written during the first three waves in Syracuse.

Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler said, "I think we have proven that high visibility enforcement will help to curb distracted driving. Our communities deserve and expect safe roadways. We will continue to do our part to fulfill their expectations."

This is the second distracted driving crackdown going on right now. Law enforcement agencies across Onondaga County are focusing on cell phone use violations for the month of April.
