LIVERPOOL --

Counting calories at fast food restaurants could soon be a whole lot easier.

The Food and Drug Administration is proposing new rules that would require chain restaurants to post calorie counts for every food item they sell. The requirement will force chains with more than 20 restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores, and coffee shops to clearly post the amount of calories in each item on a restaurant's menu.

Tom Tzivianis, the owner of a new Subway restaurant on Old Liverpool Road, says Subway already has nutritional information available on flyers in its stores and would be happy to add more.

"I think it's a great idea. We've been offering it for a long time but to have it up there so everyone has it when they are making a sandwich selction. I think it would be a great thing to offer the customers," he says.

Americans are now eating more than one third of all food at fast food restaurants. The new policy comes amid growing concerns about rising obesity and diabetes levels.

Amy Assante thinks anything that helps children make healthier food choices is a good thing.

"I think it is also really good for children to see these things, to see what they are putting in their bodies even at a young age. I think it is really good to bring it to their attention," she says.

The new calorie count requirement would apply to an estimated 280,000 restaurants nationwide, and could go into effect as early as next year.
