CANANDAIGUA (AP) -- A Long Island resident has drawn 10 years in prison for slashing his former wife's neck during an attack in upstate New York that ended with him being dragged underneath her car.

The Ontario County court clerk's office says Tuesday that John Gilbert's sentencing, which had been scheduled for this week, went ahead in March. The 59-year-old pleaded guilty in January to assault, aggravated criminal contempt and endangering the welfare of a child.

Authorities say he attacked Jennifer Gilbert with a knife when she went to his home in Geneva in 2009 to pick up her three children.

Police said that when she tried to escape, Gilbert clung to the car, fell underneath it and was dragged for 30 to 40 feet, suffering a head injury and broken limbs.
