SYRACUSE -- The Rosamond Gifford Zoo is launching a major fundraising campaign.
Conserving What We Love: The Campaign for Elephants and Primates is a $1.6 million capital campaign supporting three projects at the zoo. The money will go towards the renovated green courtyard, the Primate Park, and the Asian Elephant Preserve.
The full cost of the projects is $8.5 million. Onondaga County is funding 80% through a bond issue passed in 2007 and the Save the Rain Program. The zoo's new fundraising push will cover the other 20% through private support.
The zoo will hold several special events and activities throughout the spring break to educate the public and raise money.
Community members are also urged to take part in the zoo's Buy a Mile campaign. It's an effort to bring three of the zoo's elephant, Targa, Mali, and little Chuck back to Rosamond Gifford. The elephants have been at the African Lion Safari in Cambridge, Ontario Canada. They have been housed there while the elephant exhibit is under construction. The public can pay $10 per mile to help bring the elephants home.
