It's a disease that shows no symptoms for most, but genital herpes is still contagious---and it's an epidemic.
Dr. Rich O'Neill, with SUNY Upstate, says one in four women, and one in eight men have it---and can infect others.
Genital Herpes can be passed by saliva, and in childbirth--there is a blood test to check for it, and it can be controlled with medication, but not cured. Symptoms include pain, but it's especially dangerous, and sometimes fatal, for immune-compromised people.
The Journal of the American Medical Association has more information on a recent study of genital herpes.
