SYRACUSE -- On this Earth Day, Onondaga County is celebrating its new designation as one of 10 communities across the country named Green Infrastructure Partners. The designation from the Environmental Protection Agency will help the county and the City of Syracuse complete several green projects in the works.
CNYcentral checked in with the county today on some of those green projects. Through the Save the Rain program, several green roofs will be built around the area, including at the elephant exhibit at Rosamond Gifford Zoo, Hazard Library, the Erie Canal Museum, the Oncenter Convention Center, the County Justice Center, and other buildings. Green roofs help absorb rainwater to keep it out of the sewage system. They also insulate buildings to bring down energy costs.
Onondaga County also plans to reuse water at the War Memorial. Captured rainwater will be used for heating and cooling, and even making the ice for Syracuse Crunch hockey games.
County Executive Joanie Mahoney will join us in our studios to discuss the green projects. You can watch the interview live on NBC3 and CBS5 News at 5:30.
