SYRACUSE -- Updated at 5:40pm:

Syracuse Police have released new details about a crash that shut down part of I-81 Friday morning.

Officers say five vehicles were stopped on the Almond Street off-ramp when a sixth got off 81 on the same ramp and rear-ended one of the cars, causing a chain reaction.

Four of the six vehicles involved had to be towed away. A total of 10 people were in the cars. Nine of them were taken to the hospital as a precaution. The tenth person refused treatment at the scene.

Police are still looking into the exact cause of the crash. So far no tickets have been issued.

Syracuse police are investigating a Friday morning crash involving six cars.

It happened around 11:05 a.m. on the Interstate 81 exit ramp to Almond Street.

Five of the vehicles were stopped on the ramp when a sixth vehicle exited I-81 north and rear-ended a stopped vehicle, causing a chain reaction.  Four of the six vehicles involved in the crash had to be towed from the scene.

Nine people were transported to area hospitals, but none of the injuries appear to be life threatening. One passenger refused treatment.

The exit ramp from I-81 north to Almond Street was closed for about two hours while police and rescue crews cleared the scene. The State DOT reports that as of 12:50 p.m. the ramp has reopened.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. No tickets have been issued at this time.
