SYRACUSE -- Camillus native Mark Morabito, whose wife Laura was killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks, was elated to hear the U.S. military had finally tracked down and killed Osama bin Laden.
"You never thought it was going to happen, you always wished it was going to happen, but you never dreamed it would be carried out. So it is a pretty defining moment for me in history and I'm sure it is for the American people too," he says.
Laura Lee Morabito was aboard one of the planes that hijackers used to attack the World Trade Center. For Mark Morabito, knowing the mastermind behind those attacks is dead helps bring him a sense of closure that is long overdue.
"My wife was murdered, along with 3,000 people, for no reason at all. You want the person who is responsible for that taken into justice. So I'm very happy with the way the U.S. handled this, and the way the President handled it," he says.
While Morabito is relieved bin Laden has been brought to justice, he says nothing can ever take away the pain of losing his wife.
"It will never ever bring Laura back, it will never bring any of the victims back. But you have to have some solace in your mind that justice was done and they weren't killed in vain," he says.
After his wife's death, Morabito started a charity in her name. To date the Laura Lee Morabito Foundation has raised $750,000 for various charities.
Though his wife may be gone, Morabito says she will never be forgotten.
"She will always be in my heart," he says.
