Police agencies throughout New York and the country begin their spring "Click it or Ticket" campaign. That means police will be on the lookout with special enforcement details to make sure you are wearing your set belt. The Onondaga County Traffic Safety Advisory Board says that additional attention will be paid to enforcing the seat belt law after dark. "Consistent research has shown that fewer people are bucking up at night, when the risk of being in a fatal crash is greatest" says Camillus Police Captain Steve Rotunno.
Police and safety advocates point out that using a seat belt is the single most effective way to reduce your chance of being killed in a motor vehicle accident. Authorities say seat belts have been proven to reduce the risk of fatal injury to front passenger car occupants by 45 percent.
The stepped up seat belt enforcement will continue through the Memorial Day weekend.
