SYRACUSE -- The Syracuse Common Council's attempt to override Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner's veto of the budget enacted earlier this month failed. Councilors wanted to raise taxes to avoid some job cuts at the Syracuse City School District. Mayor Miner's office says it would have cost the average homeowner between $30-50. The attempt fell one vote short of the number needed to override. Councilor Thomas Seals says he voted,"For the silent majority of people who are fed up with paying high taxes and ever rising prices for consumer goods."
Mayor Miner's budget passes without the added tax hike. The school district says it could have been $2.4 million enough to keep up to 50 positions. 470 positions were cut by the district, 350 of the jobs lost were layoffs.
