ALBANY (AP) -- New York is promoting itself as a cheap date this holiday weekend.
The state known for its high taxes and high costs is promoting itself as a vacation destination for Canadians and residents of neighboring states by promising more smiles to the gallon.
An online guide has been created to lure summer travelers with cheap thrills at New York state destinations within the range of a tank of gas.
Links will be provided for restaurants, lodging and summer events and special packages.
The "smiles per gallon" effort augments the state's I Love New York tourism campaign that includes broadcast ads in nearby states and Canada.
