SYRACUSE -- An Onondaga County man is facing more than a decade in prison after admitting he shot his brother’s girlfriend last fall.

In Onondaga County Court Tuesday morning, James Tyler pleaded guilty to a charge of first degree assault before Judge Anthony Aloi. Tyler was accused of shooting Brittany McAlpine inside his mother’s home in Nedrow on the morning of September 26. The shooting led to a nearly two hour standoff with several police agencies, before Tyler eventually surrendered without further incident.

McAlpine was shot in the chest, but recovered. Tyler’s mother and McAlpine’s infant son were not injured. McAlpine was the girlfriend of Tyler's brother.

Tyler faces a 12 year prison sentence as part of his plea agreement. He is scheduled to be formally sentenced by Aloi on July 5.
