TOWN OF POMPEY -- A 17-year-old senior at Fayetteville-Manlius High School was severly injured in an accident on Pompey Center Road in Pompey Thursday morning.

State Police say Adam Yeates of Trout Lilly Lane in Manlius was driving a 1999 Ford Escort northbound on Pompey Center Road around 10:00 a.m. Police say he was driving at a high rate of speed when he came upon a farm vehicle hauling hay that had stopped behind a southbound vehicle so it could turn left.

Yeates was unable to stop in time and rear-ended the farm vehicle. Police say he was not wearing a seat belt. He was taken to Upstate University Hospital with head and internal injuries and two broken legs. Thursday afternoon the hospital said he was upgraded from critical to serious condition, and as of Friday morning he remains in serious condition.

The driver of the farm vehicle was not hurt. A helicopter was originally called to the scene, but then later cancelled.

Yeates' friends and fellow students took to Twitter and Facebook to show their support and offer encouragement Thursday evening. A #prayforadam Twitter hastag was even created to people could share their thoughts about him online.
