DEWITT -- A symbol of the Special Olympics made its way through Central New York Thursday afternoon.
30 police officers from around Central New York carried the "flame of hope" through Route 5 in Dewitt and into Oneida.
The torch is on its way to Utica for the opening ceremony Friday night.
Organizers say this weeks event symbolizes officers' support of Special Olympic athletes.
"It's the largest grassroots fundraiser for us globally," said Maria Alberico, Regional Director for the NY State Special Olympics. "It sponsors the athletes and keeps them alive in competitions throughout the year."
This is the 25th anniversary of the torch run.
More than $1 million was raised in New York State during last year's event.
