SYRACUSE -- Construction is expected to begin next year on the next phase of a planned multi-million renovation project at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center.
Phase 2B of the plan includes a new surgical suite with 14 operating rooms and a new patient tower with private rooms. It's expected to cost more than $140 million.
The Hayner Hoyt Corporation was selected as the construction company for this phase of the project working alongside King and King Architects.
"We are in the midst of designing the patient tower and space for the new operating rooms," said Joseph Scicchitano, vice president of support services for St. Joseph's. "If everything goes as planned, we expect to begin construction in 2012."
The first phase of the project included a new 800 space parking garage and Medical Office Centre, a pedestrian bridge and new main lobby.
The second phase has already brought major development on the other side of Prospect Avenue. It includes a new Emergency Services Building with St. Joseph's plans to open later this year. It will include a new emergency department and co-located psychiatric emergency program, as well as a clinical observation unit/chest pain center.
It will also open a brand new kitchen and a green primary data center. St. Joseph's is seeking to be LEED-silver certified for its "green" components. The hospital says this makes it the greenest healthcare construction project in Upstate New York.
St. Joseph's also is working to help revitalize the Prospect Hill neighborhood.
