SYRACUSE -- More than 300 college students gathered at Syracuse University for summer camp training. It's all part of the Say Yes to Education's summer program for students.
The training started Monday morning with performances from students who have benefited from the camp in previous years. Then, the college students broke into groups to participate in activities to develop their leadership and communication skills.
Approximately 3,500 students in the Syracuse City School District are expected to attend the summer camp, which runs from July 5th to July 29th. The camps are designed to tap into the intellectual gifts and talents that students have.
"It's really important for kids to engage in summer activities," says Rachael Gazdick, Executive Director of Say Yes to Education. "It helps to maintain their academic achievement, and for many kids, if they're not engaged in something over the summer, there's a chance they could fall back academically."
The camp is designed to make sure students don't fall behind. Students work to develop new projects and skills, and they have the chance to showcase what they've achieved at a summer festival in Thornden Park on July 27.
The college students will spend all this week training to make sure they're ready by the time camp starts.
