ONONDAGA CO. -- A benefit will be held this weekend to help support the Onondaga County Sheriff's Aviation program.
Western Area Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES), a non-for-profit organization, is organizing a Poker Run throughout Onondaga County.
Motorcycles, Hot Rods, cars and buses are invited to the event. It will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Taunton Fire Department's Station 1 on Onondaga Road.
Participants will travel through the area, stopping at the Baldwinsville, South Bay, Manlius, Tully and Skaneateles Fire Departments. It will end at the Pompey Hill Fire Department Field Days, where you can enjoy live music and food.
All proceeds benefit the Air 1 Foundation. Tickets are $30 per driver and $15 per rider.
The future of the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department's helicopter has been up in the air. Last year, the legislature decided to fund Air 1 for only 6 months. It withheld $342,000 as an incentive for the Sheriff's Department to cut costs, get an FAA license to charge outside counties for the services of the helicopter and to establish a not-for-profit to raise private donations to keep it flying.
