AUBURN -- Neighbors on Swift Street could only look on as police searched Katie Socci's home for evidence of what happened to her on Tuesday night. Many were just realizing that Socci, the friendly nurse who always had a smile or a wave, was gone and that police may have found her body.
"So sad, couldn't believe it happened around the corner - so close," said Jessica Loperfido who lives nearby.
Several neighbors had been hoping Socci would be found alive, but the news that police believe they found her body buried off a walking trail turned hope into heartbreak.
"It was shocking more than anything because she's so young and to have a child and everything - you just wonder what's going to happen to her child and scared for her," said Therese LaMontagne who lives nearby.
A single flower sat on the sidewalk outside Katie Socci's house on Wednesday night. Jay and Jessica Loperfido were walking by with their young son and both said they couldn't stop thinking about Socci's 18 month old daughter.
"Wondering when mom's going to be coming home. And that's pretty scary because our son's the same age and you know - that's sad," said Jay Loperfido.
