ALBANY (AP) -- State workers are planning to rally at 13 locations across the state to protest planned layoffs and call for a fair labor contract.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has threatened to eliminate 9,800 positions if $450 million in work force savings can't be met. The state is negotiating with the Public Employees Federation on a new contract. The union says it's awaiting a response on its contract proposal, which includes cost reductions intended to avoid layoffs.
Rallies will be held at noon Monday in Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse, Utica, Watertown, Binghamton, Poughkeepsie, Rochester, New York City and Long Island. Rallies are planned later in the afternoon in Hornell, Elmira, and Malone.
