SYRACUSE -- Syracuse Police and Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputies held a news conference Tuesday morning to announce the arrest of hundreds of suspects in a county-wide warrant sweep.
Officials called the initiative “Operation Rolling Thunder", and arrested more than 150 individuals over five days last week on outstanding warrants. Police say their primary targets were repeat offenders.
“In a detail like this, we're targeting the worst of the worst. We're going after the felons. We're going after the most important ones, and because we have this special detail, we have the luxury to do that.”
With extra officers out on the street, police say they were actually able to spot some suspects during crimes in progress. Fowler stressed no overtime was used by either the police or sheriff's departments.
“We know that a small percentage of our population commits most of the crime, and whenever we can take them off the streets for a period of time, we get to enjoy that the crime stats go down” said Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler.
Operation Rolling Thunder is a joint project by the Syracuse Police Department, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
