Family, friends gather near fatal crash site on Stoney Creek Road in Verona
VERONA -- Loved ones gathered at the scene of Sunday's fatal car crash in Verona, to remember the victims who had their lives cut short.
With arms linked, family and friends comforted each other sharing stories about Ellie Dombrowski, a woman who they say had a big heart. "Ellie has been like a second mother to me. Anytime anything happened she'd care for everyone," said family friend Laura Godkin. "It didn't matter how much or how little she had, she would share it with anyone."
The crowd stood just a few feet away from where 59-year-old Ellie Dombrowski and 68-year-old Carlton Reames were killed in the crash. Sunday, the 1957 Austin-Healy black convertible they were driving in, slammed into a road block on a closed bridge on Stoney Creek Road in Verona.
Dombrowski was a mother of 10 and most of her kids were adopted. "She loved her children very much and she was there for her kids, no matter what they needed. She was there," said family friend Barb Mather.
"She was an awesome lady, we loved the 50's music," said family friend Anna Lamb.
Police are continuing the investigation into the fatal crash. DOT officials are looking into the accident as well. Tuesday, they said there are enough warning signs leading up to the bridge to alert drivers it's closed. But officials are looking into more ways to warn motorists.
