ALBANY (AP) -- New York State Police and Canadian law enforcement are planning stepped-up traffic safety patrols at several busy border crossings during the national holiday weekends in both nations.
State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico says the effort starts Friday - Canada Day - and continues through Monday, the Fourth of July.
The traffic safety program is called "Safety Without Borders." D'Amico says state troopers and provincial police in Ontario and Quebec will intensify patrols near international crossings in Buffalo, Niagara Falls, the Thousands Islands and Champlain, just north of Plattsburgh. Those are among the nation's busiest border crossings.
Officers will be on the lookout for speeders, impaired drivers and motorists using cellphones while driving.
A similar program was held at border crossings in the Niagara Falls and Champlain regions on April 22.
