TOWN OF SALINA -- The Onondaga Lake Parkway is back open to traffic following a serious near head-on crash there this morning. The two cars collided around 7:50 a.m.

Deputies say 43-year-old Andrea Atkins, of 4235 Lucan Road, was driving a 2006 Honda Accord and traveling southeast on the Parkway when she swerved to avoid debris in the roadway. Deputies say she tried to move from the passing lane to the driving lane before realizing there was already another vehicle there. As she got back in her lane, deputies say, Atkins overcorrected and lost control, crossing into the northwest bound lanes.

The car slammed nearly head-on into a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by 50-year-old John Donegan III, of 4542 Barker Hill Road in Jamesville.

Rescue crews from the Liverpool Fire Department cut Donegan out of his car. He was taken to Upstate University Hospital where he underwent surgery, and as of Thursday afternoon he was listed in critical condition.

Atkins and her daughter, 18-year-old Karima Atkins, were also taken to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Onondaga Lake Parkway was shut down for several hours while crews cleared the scene.

Akins was issued a ticket for failure to keep right.
