Nicholas Bernier, Fort Drum soldier killed in Afghanistan

FORT DRUM -- The Fort Drum community is mourning the loss of one of their own.
21-year-old Specialist Nicholas Bernier, a 10th Mountain Division Soldier, died June 25th at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany from injuries sustained in Afghanistan.
Bernier was injured June 22nd when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire in Kherwar, Afghanistan.
Bernier was a combat medic with the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.
He joined the Army in March 2008. After training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to Fort Sam Houston, Texas in May 2008. He arrived at Fort Polk, Louisiana in April 2010 and deployed with his unit in October 2010 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Bernier's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Metal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Combat Medic Badge and the Drive and Mechanic Badge.
Bernier is originally from East Kingston, New Hampshire.
He is survived by his mother, father, brothers and sister.
