SYRACUSE -- It's the first day on the job for the new superintendent of the Syracuse City School District.
Sharon Contreras took over Friday from Dr. Dan Lowengard, who retired on June 30th. Contraras' first official duty was to tour the work-scholarship program at the Hillside School. She was accompanied by Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner, who had a sometimes strained relationship with Lowengard.
When reporters asked Contreras about her relationship with the Mayor, she replied that the Mayor's success is dependent upon the School District's success. Contreras said she and Miner would be "joined at the hip" as they work together to improve the school system.
Contreras also said she will begin a listening tour of the district so parents, educators and students can present their ideas and concerns about education in Syracuse.
