BALLSTON SPA (AP) -- A 38-year-old Saratoga County man has been sent to jail for a year for crushing a tiny puppy after it wet the carpet.
County Judge Jerry Scarano sentenced Jarrod Lent Tuesday for killing Aeromay, a 6-month-old Yorkshire terrier, by shoving a couch against a wall as the puppy cowered behind it. The dog died instantly.
Lent, of Corinth, pleaded guilty in May to aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony. The judge said Lent's rage made him dangerous to others.
In 1999, state legislators passed Buster's Law, which set steeper penalties for animal abusers. Under the law, those convicted of killing an animal with aggravated cruelty can be sentenced up to 2 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
