ALBANY (AP) -- A trade organization representing the tourism industry says New York's hotels, amusement parks and attractions reported strong business over the July 4th weekend and expressed optimism about the summer travel season.

A survey conducted by the New York State Hospitality and Tourism found 74 percent of respondents said hotel occupancy during the July 4th weekend was better than, or as good as, the same weekend last year. Three-quarters of respondents report summer booking activity is better than, or same as, the same time last year.

The group says consumers are taking advantage of local vacation destinations within a day's drive of home.

Among New York's amusement parks and attractions, 72 percent of respondents said July 4th weekend attendance was better than, or as good as, the same weekend last year.
