ALBANY (AP) -- Environmental groups say new air pollution rules approved by the Obama administration will help plants and wildlife in the Catskills, Adirondacks and other Northeastern mountains recover from decades of acid rain.
Brian Houseal, executive director of the Adirondack Council, said Thursday that the new Cross-State Air Pollution Rule will stop emissions from other states from contaminating soils, killing forests, and poisoning fish and birds with mercury.
The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday finalized rules governing air pollution from power plants that drifts across state lines.
Houseal said Congress must reinforce EPA's authority to impose the new rules. That would prevent lawsuits by power companies from blocking implementation of the rules.
