SYRACUSE -- The Crouse Hospital community is pausing with a moment of silence today for a young man who made the ultimate sacrifice for the rest of us.
Corporal Kyle Schneider, of Phoenix, was killed in Afghanistan last week. He was just 23-years-old.
His father, Rick, has been a CT Technician at Crouse for nearly 20 years. His aunt, Kelly, is also a Crouse team member on 7 Memorial.
The hospital is joining together in a moment of silence and reflection at noon today in memory of Schneider and in honor of all those who serve their country.
"The entire Crouse family extends heartfelt condolences to Rick, his wife Lorie, son Kevin and all the members of his family and circle of friends and fellow Marines," Crouse said in a statement on its website.
As a "visible" memorial of the sacrifice Kyle and his parents made for our country, the iconic Crouse Hospital clock tower will be lit tonight and throughout the weekend of his calling hours and funeral service in red, white and blue.
Family and friends will gather to honor Schneider's life at calling hours today from 3-7 p.m. at CW Baker High School in Baldwinsville, where he was a 2006 graduate. His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church on State Route 31 in Clay. He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C.
On Thursday, hundreds came out to show their respects as Schneider's body was returned home to Hancock Airfield. Some 120 motorcycles led a procession to the Falardeau Funeral Home in Baldwinsville. Hundreds were lining the streets, waving American flags and saying thanks to a young man who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Schneider is remembered as an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors. He played baseball, football and ran track. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2008.
He is survived by his parents Richard and Lorie Schneider, brother Kevin and fiancée Theresa Lynn Dodge.
