BENTON, NY (AP) -- Police say a 16-year-old girl has drowned after the paddle boat she was on tipped over during an outing on a pond in the Finger Lakes region.

The Yates County Sheriff's Office says Susan Hoover of Penn Yan was one of four people on board the boat when it capsized Sunday afternoon on a pond on private property in the town of Benton, on Seneca Lake's western shore 45 miles southeast of Rochester.

Deputies say bystanders went into the water to help the passengers get out, but Hoover couldn't be found.

Her body was found nearly three hours later 35 feet from shore in water about 20 feet deep.

Police say none of the four was wearing a life jacket.
