Businesses 'taking ownership' of trash cleanup
It started before The Mountain Goat: volunteers policed the course and picked up litter before the racers came out. Ed Griffin, from Fleet Feet, then applied for and got a grant, from New Balance, to set up ongoing cleanups. Downtown businesses have signed on , and Dot Hall, from O'Brien and Gere, says the first cleanup is this Saturday at 10am, starting in the parking lot at West Fayette and Franklin Street. The downtown area and near west side will be included in the monthly efforts (August 13, Sept 17 and October 15 are the remaining dates for the three hour cleanup efforts). Hall says volunteers are welcome, and there've been contributions, including tongs to pick up trash.
The hope is, to expand after this year and include young people, to 'change the culture' of just throwing trash out of cars and onto sidewalks and roadways. But, the start is to get the areas clean, to allow more 'Pride in Syracuse'. For more information, Ed Griffin is at 430-4774 or ed@fleetfeetsyracuse.com
