Be careful the next time your phone rings. There's an alleged jury duty scam going around you need to be aware of.
According to the State Consumer Protection Board, the caller identifies him/herself as an officer of the court. He/she says you failed to report for jury duty and a warrant is out for your arrest.
When you tell the person you never received a notice, the caller says they'll need to get some information for "verification purposes" like your birth date, social security number and credit card number.
Court officers will never ask for this kind of information over the phone. They generally correspond with prospective jurors via mail.
Protecting yourself is key. Remember, never to give your personal information to anyone you don't know over the phone.
