SYRACUSE -- "Harry Potter" mania is taking over movie theaters in Central New York.
At midnight, several theaters debuted "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" to sold out crowds. It's the final movie in the series.
According to movie ticket website Fandango, Regal Cinemas at Carousel Center is playing the movie on ten screens. All of those were sold out Thursday night.
Those who were left out Thursday night needn't fear: The cinema began screening the movie again Friday morning at 9:50.
Many fans said the event was bittersweet. They were excited to see a new Harry Potter movie but sad that it would be the last one in the series. Some people wore costumes, capes or brought light up wands to the theater.
At the Regal Cinemas in Shoppingtown Mall, all nine midnight screenings were sold out. All six midnight screenings at Great Northern Mall were also sold out.
The seven previous chapters of the "Harry Potter" film series have accrued more than $6.41 billion in worldwide ticket sales, and cost more than $1.15 billion to make. "Harry Potter" is the highest grossing film series on record. The movies are based on the books of the same name, about a boy wizard and his friends who fight against an evil wizard and his dark army.
