AUBURN -- A Michigan man has been cleared of two charges after being accused of trying to kidnap a woman at knifepoint earlier this week.
The Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office tells CNY Central that on Friday a Grand Jury dismissed charges against 57-year-old Hristu Sacu. Sacu, a truck driver originally from Romania, was arrested on Wednesday on charges of second degree attempted kidnapping, fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon and second degree menacing. Police said an inidentified 25-year-old woman had accused Sacu of grabbing her and trying to force her into his truck at knifepoint.
In a statement to the media, Cayuga County Assistant D.A. Christopher Valdina said “A thorough investigation by the Auburn Police Department facilitated prompt Grand Jury review and disposition of this matter.”
The D.A.’s Office says only the attempted kidnapping and menacing charges have been dropped. The weapons charge still stands because Sacu was allegedly in possession of a switchblade knife, which prosecutors say is illegal in New York State.
The D.A.’s Office would not comment further on the case, citing the remaining charge against Sacu. However, they did say that the switchblade was not connected to the dismissed kidnapping charge.
Sacu has been released from the Cayuga County Jail.
