SYRACUSE -- Syracuse firefighters were called to an overnight fire on the city's southwest side.

The fire at 1020 Midland Avenue was reported at 3:38 Wednesday morning. When firefighters arrived, the people who lived there had already escaped. The fire heavily damaged the home. No injuries were reported.

Fire officials say the fire apparently began on the second floor, but are still trying to determine what caused the fire.

While the fire was reported during the overnight hours while it was still cool, fire officials tell CNY Central's Brandon Roth that the department is already taking steps to protect its members from today's oppressive heat. That includes bringing more personnel to a fire scene and rotating them in and out of firefighting duties more frequently.

The department also set up fans and misters at the scene. Officers are also making sure all the firefighters stay hydrated.
