GRANBY -- Officials in the Town of Granby have a hole to fill after their town clerk resigned over her opposition to gay marriage.
The Granby Town Board meets in a special session Wednesday evening to discuss the resignation of Ruth Sheldon, who announced her intent to leave her job earlier this month. The resignation is effective this Saturday, the day before New York's same sex marriage law takes effect.
Sheldon told CNY Central's Jim Kenyon Monday that gay marriage violates her "conscience and faith," so she could not sign her name to a marriage certificate for same sex couples.
Sheldon has offered to stay on as Deputy Town Clerk to help any new appointee become familiar with the job. Should the town agree to this offer, or should it accept her resignation?
Granby Supervisor Ed Williamson says Sheldon has two years left on her term, so the person appointed to replace her could fill out her term unless a candidate steps up to run for the seat. In that case, Williamson says there would have to be a special election in November.
Williamson says the Town Board will meet in executive session to consider its options. What do you think they should do?
